Getting married, having a baby, moving house, getting a new job, setting out on your own are all major events on our journey through life.
The Bible compares human life to the image of a journey that we each take.
Like the Church of England in general, here at St Matt’s we recognise the importance of this journey through life. This section of our web site provides background information on some of those life stages – baptism, weddings and funerals and how we can help you as a church.
Baptism
Baptism marks the start of a journey of faith, which involves turning away from the darkness of self-centredness, turning towards Christ and becoming a member of the local and worldwide Christian family. At St Matt’s we offer a choice of either a traditional Baptism service or a service of Thanksgiving.

Wedding
Anyone living in the parish is entitled to be married at St Matt’s Church. If you are an active, worshiping member of another church congregation, it is usually possible to be married there if you wish. We would love to be part of your wedding day, and we hope that it is all you want it to be and that it will mark the beginning of a long and very happy marriage.

Funeral
A funeral marks the close of a human life on earth. It is the opportunity for friends and family to express their grief, to give thanks for the life of someone at the end of their journey in this world and to commend them into God’s keeping.
Funerals at St Matt’s can be simple and quiet with only a few members of the family present or an occasion of great solemnity with music, hymns and a packed church.
